What is Crescent Kitchen? • Crescent Kitchen is a social enterprise launched in 2010 and is managed by The Broomhouse Centre. • Crescent Kitchen provides catering services to both businesses and individuals within Edinburgh and the Lothians. • There are two sides to the business: • outside catering - buffet service and onsite chef for private dinner parties • contract catering service.

The Broomhouse Centre • A Registered Scottish Charity SC003706 – 1991 • Company Limited by Guarantee 32027 – 2006 • Healthy Living Award - 2009 • Investing in Volunteers Organisation – 2010 • Based in South West Edinburgh • 11 core services • 23 staff with 105 volunteers • Focused on Broomhouse which is a designated deprived area • SIMD - In the worst 20% for housing and employment, the worst 5% for health and income and the worst 2% for education, skills and training • Serving 1200 Households – population 3500 Our Mission Statement • We are here to provide personal, social and community development opportunities for disadvantaged groups in and around Broomhouse in the areas of Health/Community Care, Education/Training, Social Inclusion/Outreach Activities.

Social Aims • to create jobs and training opportunities for vulnerable groups furthest away from the job market (young people not in education, training or employment, long term unemployed, adults with mental health issues). • to generate income to be re-invested back into the community via The Broomhouse Centre

Outside Catering “Good food for a good cause” • Social enterprise offering a personal service with good food at a competitive price and is reliable. • Cater to local businesses and organisations within Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. • Offer a wide selection of platters and buffets • Use local seasonal produce (e.g. John Brash Butchers and Broomhouse Fruit and Veg Coop) • Cater for business lunches, meetings, training events, parties and much more. • Cater for specific dietary requirements.

Contract Catering – McAlpines Contract • Crescent Kitchen entered into a partnership agreement with Sir Robert McAlpine in August 2011 to manage a catering facility on the site of the expanded Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC) and associated Grade A office development until December 2012. • Crescent Kitchen is providing a Monday to Friday catering service for the Sir Robert McAlpine staff and subcontractors with breakfast and lunch options.

Contract Catering – McAlpines Contract • Approach from Andrew Day at McAlpines • Meeting at The Broomhouse Centre to discuss opportunity and for Andrew to find out more about Crescent Kitchen and the work carried out by The Broomhouse Centre • Proposal • Trial period with temporary kitchen • Formal partnership agreement • Installation of permanent kitchen

Partnership Working The contract has been mutually beneficial for both parties: Crescent Kitchen • Achieve Social Aims • Achieve maximum profits with assistance from McAlpines with: • No rent costs / heating & lighting / power • Support to install new kitchen • Opportunity to build on skills and experience working with the private sector • Stepping stone to help win future contracts McAlpines • Community Benefit • Corporate Social Responsibility • Added value in providing a quality catering service for operatives on site • Providing additional employment opportunities • Building a longer term relationship with Crescent Kitchens

  10. Social Benefits • 2 new jobs for long term unemployed adults • 1 Community Jobs Scotland placement for a young person not in education, training or employment • Generating income to be re-invested back into The Broomhouse Centre

  11. New Opportunities • Leith Community Education Centre Cafe Franchise • May 2012 • 2 month trial • Creating 2 new jobs initially and offering volunteering and trainees placements • Outside Catering - New menu & new markets
