The Cuban Rebellion • 1868 – Cuban rebels begin to launch attacks against Spain. • Jose Marti – exiled Cuban revolutionary • Planned a revolution while in the U.S. • Died in battle taking over Cuba. • Sept. 1895 – The Republic of Cuba is established as the rebels claim independence from Spain.

The U.S. supports Cuba • Many felt Cuba’s struggle was similar to the American Revolution. • Newspapers begin reporting on the atrocities taking place in Cuba (fed to the sharks/dogs). • William Randolph Hearst’s The Journal • Joseph Pulitzer’s The World • Yellow Journalism – exaggerated reports/made up stories • Guerilla Warfare

  5. Americans call for war! • The U.S. pushed Spain to negotiate with Cuba • Cuba refused; they wanted full Independence • Pres. McKinley sent the USS Maine to Havana in case Americans in Cuba needed to be evacuated. • The USS Maine explodes in Havana! • Spain is blamed • $50 million in war preparations • “Remember the Maine” • Republican jingoism – aggressive Nationalism • Theodore Roosevelt – Called for McKinley to go to war.

Battle on 2 fronts • The U.S. and Spain go to war! • April 19 – U.S. declares Cuba independent • April 24 – Spain declares war on the U.S. • Fighting on 2 Fronts • The U.S. fought Spain in the Caribbean and the Philippines. • Americans quickly seized the Philippine capital of Manila. • 17,000 U.S. troops land in Santiago, Cuba • More Americans die in camp than in battle due to epidemics caused from unsanitary conditions.

  9. The Rough Riders emerge! • Volunteer Cavalry Unit made up of cowboys, miners, and law officers. • Commander – Col. Leonard Wood • Second in command – Theodore Roosevelt • They were aided in the capture of San Juan Hill by the all-black 9th and 10th cavalry regiments • As the Spanish tried to escape the harbor, the U.S. Navy sank or beached every vessel.

The end of an empire; the birth of another • After ceasing Santiago, the U.S. troops occupy the Spanish colony of Puerto Rico. • Aug. 12th 1898 – Spain and U.S. agree to cease-fire. • Cuba was given it’s freedom. • The U.S. annexed Puerto Rico & Guam. • What was going to happen with the Philippines?
