BEGINNING LIFE AS A PIRATE • Sailed near Jamaica on ships of privateering during Queen Anne’s War • Joined Captain Benjamin Hornigold’s crew • Hornigold put Blackbeard in charge of a sloop
CAREER AS BLACKBEARD • Captured a French ship and named it, “Queen Anne’s Revenge” • Worked at American Coast from Newfound Land to Trinidad • 1718, killed in Ocracoke Island, NC, by Robert Maynard on boat called, “Adventure”
WHY WAS HE SUCH A SIGNIFICANT PIRATE TO SC? • May, 1718, he blocked off Charleston harbor for a week • Captured The Crowley, full of Charleston citizens • Blackbeard demanded medicine for himself and his crew • Stede Bonnet, Lieutenant Richards, and Israel Hands, all commanded a ship to help the blockade • Charleston citizens were released after Blackbeard got medical supplies from Charleston
