Sunlight brings energy into the climate system; most of it is absorbed by the oceans and land. THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT: Heat (infrared energy) radiates outward from the warmed surface of the Earth. Some of the infrared energy is absorbed by greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which re-emit the energy in all directions. Some of the infrared energy further warms the Earth. Some of the infrared energy is emitted into space. AMPLIFIED GREENHOUSE EFFECT: Higher concentrations of CO2 and other "greenhouse" gases trap more infrared energy in the atmosphere than occurs naturally. Increased Greenhouse Gases’ possible Impact on Global Sea Level • Increased greenhouse gasses in the Earth’s atmosphere my result in more infrared energy (heat) being trapped • This may cause the Earth’s surface and atmosphere to become warmer • A warmer Earth could mean an increase in glacial melting and warmer ocean temperatures • As water becomes warmer, it expands taking up more space. This phenomenon is called thermal expansion • Thermal expansion of ocean water + increase of water in the oceans due to glacial melting = rising sea level. *Local sea level change is also effected by changes in land elevation through faulting, subsidence, and shoreline erosion.
