DENSITY REDUCTION GROUNDWATER RESOURCE AREA, SE LEE COUNTY ONE AREA, ONE GOVERNMENT, DIFFERENT DREAMS
A Special Designation • Lee County’s population and population growth until 2030 can be accommodated within areas already prepared for intense development. • Population, however, requires regional resources for expansion as well as sustaining current population • SE DRGR is one such area, designated through its Comprehensive Plan
Within the DRGR are 5 major activities • Housing at low densities, constrained to averages of 1 unit per 10 or 20 acres • Mining, dirt or aggregate/rock • Agriculture, from pasture to citrus to row crops • Open Space recreation • Conservation lands, public and private • All accommodated within the FLUM
County Policy in the DRGR is to manage groundwater resources • To provide sources for public water supplies and domestic use • To maintain wetlands and habitat • To provide dry season flow/seepage to the estuaries • To serve as insurance in water resource supply planning by preventing overdraining • The following slide depicts surface systems
And Other Public Facilities are Forecasted • A paralleling route, east of I-75, to facilitate north/south travel between the Fort Myers and Naples urban areas • And east/west connections between the growing Lehigh Acres community and middle Lee County urban areas. • These routes are depicted on the attached map. (All routes are provisional, subject to siting studies and funding).
And then there are “Investment Based Expectations” • Current residents desire the quiet enjoyment of their property rights • Current land owners desire a return on their investment, either through their own use of the land, or through resales • Markets are not necessarily locally driven • The map depicts by color different land investment activities
But Now It Is Your Turn • The purpose of the workshop is to solicit your view regarding the most critical issue or issues facing the DRGR • The Board of County Commissioners is having its own workshop to evaluate what the different reports indicate what changes are needed, if any. • Written comments will be taken until August 2nd , and will be added to today’s comments, in a report for that meeting.
