Quick Review • What is irony? • The contrast between what is and what seems to be. • What is dramatic irony? • When the audience knows something to be true and the characters think differently. • What is situation irony? • A contrast between what happens and what was expected. • What is verbal irony? • A contrast between what is said and what is meant.

  4. Who is the pardoner? Remember this picture? What else do we know about this guy? • He sings in a high voice. • He pardons people, but doesn’t care about their souls…only about their money! • He is quite emasculated in many ways, but which way is Chaucer trying to push us towards?

  5. HOMEWORK! Finish “The Pardoner’s Tale” and questions
