EMPOWERING YOUTH: REACHING OUT TO DENTAL PROVIDERS TO ENCOURAGE SMOKELESS TOBACCO CESSATION AND EDUCATION
NORTH CAROLINA’S YOUTH TOBACCO PREVENTION AND CESSATION MOVEMENT
TRU PHASE III GRANTS (JULY 2006 – JUNE 2009)
WHY A REGIONAL TRAINING? Remind the youth that they are part of a statewide movement Give youth a chance to network and share ideas in a setting where they can be heard Provide time to work on a specific regional project; regional projects increase the odds of successful outreach and media Save money vs. a statewide training
THE PLAN FOR THE RETREAT To learn the difference between smokeless tobacco and spit tobacco products To learn about new tobacco products that are currently being test marketed or that have recently made it to the market To build TRU leaders from each community to create youth-led partnerships in the Central Region To share current, successful initiative from each county To plan and execute a regionally unified but local, Through With Chew Week advocacy initiative
2009 WINTER RETREAT COUNTIES Participating Counties Sophia, NC
WHO SAYS YOU CAN’T GO CAMPING IN THE WINTER? Who: 65 TRU youth, 13 adult leaders/chaperones Where: Camp Caraway in Sophia, NC When: January 17-18, 2009 Cost: $56 per person for food and lodging

PACKETS SENT AND POSTCARDS RECEIVED *FirstHealth operates in Montgomery, Moore, Richmond, and Scotland counties **Forsyth sent a different version of the postcards in their packets
2009-2010 PLAN Great American Smoke-Out youth retreat Similar plan, but focused on smoking rather than smokeless tobacco
LESSONS LEARNED/ADAPTABILITY Better way of reaching dentists Follow-up for non-responders? Youth reached a population they otherwise only deal with as patients Youth needed guidance for this project
