  4. Today’s lesson By the end of the double period, you need to have completed the language analysis document. Open email and add the text to your English workbook on google docs. Ensure you work well otherwise you will be completing it at recess/lunchtime today.

Structure of a language analysis (1) Introduction using COATS (2) Body paragraph 1 – first argument used to support contention and how the persuasive language was used to position the reader Body paragraph 2 and 3 – repeat with second and third argument (3) Conclusion restating the arguments and identifying which techniques most strongly positioned the audience

Task 2: construct your introduction • Begin your written response with a formal introduction. • In this introduction that should be about 100 words include the following:- * Contention – The writer is arguing that………… * Overview - The issue of ………………….. has been recently debated in the media with many concerns being expressed regarding …………. in particular. * Audience – The target audience that the writer had in mind when writing this article was ……………………………. because this group would be very concerned if ………………………. * Tone – The writer is clearly (emotion) and maintains this tone throughout the commentary. Though the tone does soften in a few places, his outrage due to …………………….. is evident for most of the article. * Source/style – In the (form) published in the publication (date), author contends that ………(repeat contention) Complete and then insert this paragraph into your google doc

  8. Linking the arguments to the persuasive techniques Identify three main arguments that the Munro uses to argue the contention. These are a little bit like the reasons. (Hint – the quiz might help, but you can probably identify other techniques).

As a topic sentence: Munro argues that the harm of non-vaccination outweighs the risk of vaccination. Second argument: Third argument: Identify the second and third argument and write as topic sentences and then insert them into your google doc

Identify the persuasive techniques used for each argument Argument 1: The harm of non-vaccination greatly outweighs the risk of vaccination. • Uses strong language like “excruciating pain”, “gut-wrenching agony” and “cruelty” to position the reader to react emotively, rather than rationally, to his suggestion that the alternative to vaccination is the kind of reaction that the 7 year old is reported to have had. • The idea of a “burial grounds” full of children is without a doubt a generalisation, without any fact employed, but is a profoundly disturbing image that positions the reader to consider the fact that “no child had died from a vaccination”. See how I added these ideas into your first body paragraph and crafted it into a coherent passage.

  15. Task 6: Write conclusion In summary, (author) contends (contention). His main argument is (argument) which author expresses using (persuasive techniques). Author also persuasively argues that (second argument), positioning the audience to (effect of persuasive technique) using (persuasive technique). Finally, author states that (third argument). Author’s successfully/unsuccessfully positions the audience to (contention), in particular his/her use of (one particularly persuasive technique).
