  4. WHO WE ARE • A 501 (c) 3 nonprofit organization providingfree English language tutoring to adults • Tutoring by volunteers • Affiliate of ProLiteracy America® (Largest volunteer literacy agency ) LCS

  5. WHAT IS PRO LITERACY ? • World’s largest literacy organization using volunteer tutors. • 1,100 affiliates throughout the US • 70 partner programs in 39 developing countries • Publisher of 500 titles of adult educational material for 46,000 organizations worldwide. LCS

  6. KEY PRINCIPLES • Peer relationship built on trust and respect. • Build on what the student knows. • Success for learners. • Cut “No” out of your vocabulary. • Use what works LCS

  7. WHAT WE DO • Train volunteers to tutor English[listening, speaking, reading, writing, math and computer skills] • Match student and tutor and provide on-going support. • Maintain library of teaching materials to lend or sell. LCS

  8. WHO WE CURRENTLY SERVE • 75 volunteer tutors • 185 adult clients • 90 % ESL students • 10 % functionally illiterate adults LCS

  9. HOW WE DO IT • Most teach one-to-one; a few small classes. • Students are carefully matched with tutors. • Tutors and students arrange for space and time. • Twice weekly class is best with 1.5 hour session. • Scheduling is flexible. • Requested commitment 6-9 months. LCS

  11. WHAT COMES NEXT ? • Complete Workshop; select a student with Sara • Meet student • Decide on teaching materials. • Call Sara at 206 233 9720 after first lesson. • Report problems promptly. • Report hours monthly. • Register for Tutor Training Part 2 LCS

  12. WHAT YOU CAN DO • Tutor: an ESL or Adult Basic student. • Office: Help a few hours each month. • Join the Board • Newsletter – Write or edit. • Events: Plan and do fund raising projects. • Become a Tutor Trainer LCS

  13. ESL TUTOR TRAINING GOALS • Introduce six teaching techniques • See that “English only” works • Gain working skill with one series • Learn “where to start” • Show a “success attitude” • Develop effective lessons • Assess progress of learner skills • Increase confidence and have fun! LCS
