KESWICK to BARROW WALK 2009 www.keswick2barrow.co.uk Instructions for Support Vehicles These instructions have been prepared with the support of Cumbria Constabulary who have expressed their concern for the safety of walkers from the actions of some less responsible support vehicle drivers. The following instructions and support vehicle routes are directed at keeping the walk’s low accident record and avoiding traffic and walker congestion of the walk route known to be potentially hazardous. Marshals will be in attendance to control the walk and their directions should be followed at all times. Please display your Team Name and Number in your Support Vehicles at all times and please adhere to these instructions and note where they say “NO SUPPORT VEHICLES” Note for 2008 Monk Coniston has become Checkpoint 3 and Marton, Checkpoint 7 has been re-located (see map). Approaching the Start APPROACH THE START SLOWLY AND WITH CAUTION The walk start is a short distance from the end of the dual carriageway on the A591 at the North end of Thirlmere (see below). BEWARE some walkers may have already set off and will be approaching the oncoming traffic prior to turning down the West side of Thirlmere. WALKERS WILL ALSO BE CROSSING THE ROAD. At the Start DO NOT PARK OR DROP OFF WALKERS ON THE MAIN HIGHWAY Just to the North of the walk start, off the South bound side of the carriageway, there is a lay-by which must be used to drop off walkers. Entry to this lay-by will be at the northern end, around the bend in the main road towards Keswick. Exit will be from the Southern end, nearest to the walk start Marshals. Start to Check Point 1 DO NOT DRIVE ALONG THE WEST SIDE OF THIRLMERE (WALK ROUTE) Follow the main road to the summit of Dunmail Raise where adequate parking exists. DO NOT STOP at the intersection where the walk route joins the main road from Thirlmere. CAUTION should be taken here as it is a Main Road. From here proceed to the check point on the southern outskirts of Grasmere village by the main road, use the most southerly of the 3 branches off the main road to avoid the village centre. DO NOT FOLLOW the walk route between Dunmail Raise and the village. Dunmail Raise To Keswick Walkers Support Vehicles CAUTION Parking here is on the Grass verge CAUTION Care must be taken as this is a Main Road To Grasmere
Grasmere Check Point 1 The check point car park has limited parking and gets very congested, an alternative is the large car park on the right, just after the turn off the main road, it has public toilets and is only a few minutes walk from the check point. DO NOT FOLLOW THE WALK ROUTE to ELTERWATER Proceed via the main road to Ambleside then via Skelwith Bridge to Elterwater Common. DO NOT PARK IN THE VILLAGE CENTRE Due to the increase in walk numbers parking here has become increasingly congested and Caution should be taken. Parking exists on the outskirts of the village that would allow a short walk to the crossroads. Elterwater to Check Point 3 Return to Skelwith Bridge and turn right following the main road to Coniston. Along this road by Yewtree Tarn their are various area’s to park. PARK SENSIBLY Proceed on the main road through Coniston Village to the top of Coniston Water and PARK at Monk Coniston. Checkpoint 3 Monk Coniston When you approach Monk Coniston extreme Caution should be taken, this area becomes very busy for supporting vehicles as this is the last point to support your team before they make their way down the east side of Coniston Water. DO NOT FOLLOW THE EAST SIDE OF CONISTON WALK ROUTE From Monk Coniston proceed via the main road on the west side of the Lake to Lowick and the Red Lion. This route avoids the East Side of the Lake road completely and we appreciate that it is a long stretch for the walkers. Therefore, we have arranged for an official support vehicle to patrol the section and render assistance where required. Anyone needing medical attention will be brought down to the first aid unit adjacent to the Lowick Check Point. Lowick Check Point 5 Lowick has become an increasingly popular meeting and spectator viewing place. Their is a field supplied for support vehicle parking, please park sensibly and don’t block entrances and exits, used sensibly this field can accommodate a lot of valued parking. DO NOT FOLLOW THE WALK ROUTE “OVER THE TOP” From Lowick proceed on the main road via Greenodd and through to Ulverston from here you can make your way up on to Kirkby Moor and intersect the route, but please do not drive the walk route. From Ulverston you can proceed to the village of Marton to rejoin the walk route. Again, it is appreciated that the walk route from Lowick “over the top” to Marton is particularly arduous and again an official support vehicle has been arranged. This will collect the halt and the lame and take them to the Marton Check Point, or, if necessary, the first aid post at the Black Dog. Marton Checkpoint 7 The village of Marton is very restrictive for support vehicles, caution on these roads should be taken at all times. Hopefully you’ve not followed the walk route from Lowick and have made your way via Lindal or Dalton in Furness. On the outside of Marton village, part of a field has been made available for approx 25 – 30 vehicles to park as the village is very tight for walkers when support vehicles come through. Please respect the local village people and adhere to all Marshals and Officials. Beyond this point no significant hazards exists other than carefully making your way via checkpoint 8 - Dalton in Furness and on to Barrow and parking in the designated areas around Hawcoat Park Sports and social Club which is on Hawcoat Lane, LA14 4HF.
