  2. Sharps Usage in CA • 40 Million People in CA • 7.6% are Diabetic • 16% Inject Insulin • 486,000 People Self-Inject Insulin in CA • 2 Syringes Used Per Day/Person

  3. Sharps Usage in CA • 355 Million Syringes for Diabetics • Only 30% of Self-Injectors are Self-Injecting Diabetics • Could be 1 Billion Sharps Per Year Needed to Be Disposed

  4. SB 1305-Sharps Law • Effective September 1, 2008 • Added Home-Generated Sharps Waste • Home-Generated Sharps are not Medical Waste • Requires Special Handling and Disposal

  5. Home-Generated Sharps Waste Disposal Ban Sharps Can’t be Placed in the Following Containers: • Solid Waste, • Recyclable Materials, and • Greenwaste.

  6. Enforcement Enforcement of This Law is Unclear and May Only be Done Through a Local Ordinance.

  7. Disposal Options for Home-Generated Sharps Waste • Household Hazardous Waste Facility, • Sharps Consolidation Point, • Medical Waste Generator Facility, or • Mail-back Container.

  8. Disposal Options-Consolidation Points • Must Accept Home-Generated Sharps • Need Written Approval from Local Enforcement Agency • Must Accept Sharps in Approved Containers; and • Sharps Must be Handled, Stored and Transported as a Medical Waste After Receipt.
