Program Design • A drop-box will be placed at a participating pharmacy (or other location) • Current and new customers will visit the box to deposit their pharms with a high degree of possible incremental purchases (if at retail location i.e., pharmacy) • One key held by management, one by Curbside, it takes two keys to open the box • List of controlled substances attached to box • Curbside visits periodically and removes pharms or sharps.
The Drop-Box • Two std sizes, 24 and 44 gallon, used for either pharmsor sharps. Custom sizes avail.
Security • Pharms are secured inside of 12 gauge steel box with two locks. • When the Curbside employee arrives, the box is opened under the supervision of a pharmacy employee. • No pharmacy or Curbside employee will physically touch a container or sort through them • Protects pharmacy license • Does not conflict with DEA CSA
Drop-box - Pharms or Sharps • 12 gauge steel • Site opening to determine when full • Light inside to help in darker areas • Tab to lock consumer door when full • Two locks • Feet to allow for cleaning under box and eliminate moisture. • Can be bolted to floor or to wall • Powder coated, variety of colors available • Selection of sizes
Security • The container in the drop-box is removed, a lid placed on top and both individuals walk to the parking lot with the container. • The Curbside employee will pour the contents of the larger container into the disposal machine as the pharmacy employee watches. Entire process should take less than five minutes.
Security • The materials poured into the machine are crushed and shredded into powder and plastic/glass pieces. • The pharmacy employee signs a document indicating that they witnessed the destruction of the materials. • The destroyed materials are transported to a facility where they will be incinerated.
Regulatory Environment • Non-controlled, non-hazardous substances are not controlled by any government entity • Hazardous pharms generated by households are not federally regulated, however, we destroy them by incineration. • This material is not a medical waste.
Sharps • The internal 20 or 44 gallon container is removed. Lid placed on top for shipping. • Reconditioned container placed inside and box is locked. • Waste is shipped to medical waste transfer station or medical waste treatment facility for destruction.
Documentation • Waste pharms are weighed before they are destroyed on the vehicle • A D.O.T. shipping document will list all details, a copy left at the store • Curbside retains copies of manifests for all waste pharms shipped for final incineration • Sharps transported on approved shipping document
