Background of Chapters Chapter 11: Mariam wore burqa, went to a restaurant and ate ice cream for the first time. Rasheed bought her a shawl and she thought of it as a “true gift”, unlike Jalils gifts. Chapter 12: It is the beginning of Ramadan. Then Eid-ul-Fitr came, the celebration after Ramadan. Later they had some Eid Visitors and Mariam would have to go upstairs to her room, close the door and not come down until the visitors left. Mariam did not mind this because she felt it protected her, she felt as thought she was a “treasured and significant.” Later that week while Rasheed was visiting a friend Mariam went into Rasheeds room for the first time. Even though she felt guilty when she opened the dresser she found a gun. She also found naked picutres of girls. Mariam began to question herself. Had he been dissapointed with her? Mariam also found a pictures of Yunus, Rasheeds dead son and his old wife. Chapter 13: On a bus ride home from the doctors, Rasheed said “if it’s a girl, then you can choose whatever name you want.” Rasheed makes a crib for the baby and bought a suede winter coat for a boy. Rasheed began to treat Mariam differently and Maraim asked if he was upset with her. Mariam asked if they could have a proper burial for their child. Rasheed thought of it as idiotic. Mariam, alone, buried the coat as a symbolic remembrance for her dead child. Chapter 15: Rasheed begins to ignore and become very frustrated with Mariam. He does not look at her when she speaks and criticizes her every move. Mariam, over a span of 4 years, had 6 more miscarriages. Rasheed became more and more resentful towards Mariam.
