  2. WHAT NEEDED? • 3 years experience in recognised GP/emergency pathways posts • GMC registration • ALS/ALCS compulsory • ATLS/PALS desirable • Good communication skills

  3. WHAT INVOLVED? • Working in team with 2-5 nurses and 2nd Dr in bigger ships. • Am and pm clinic lasting 2-3hrs each and urgents only for rest of day. • On call whenever on board if single doctor • Deal with everything from viral illness (usual) to trauma/sepsis/cardiac event

  4. FACILITIES • Private – fully stocked pharmacy • Specialist referral to shore – no bed crises!

  5. RECREATION • Accommodation equal to or better than passengers • Company of possibly more than 1000 crew and 3000 passengers. • Access to swimming pools, gym, sun decks, bars and food.

  6. PERKS • Great pay - £50 000 for 6/12 contract poss. • Malpractice cover paid for by company • Flown out on company expense to liner • Lots of free time for revising/taking up hobbies • Yearly all expenses paid conference of Institute of Cruise ship medicine • You are you own boss

  7. DOWNSIDE • Senior medic on board – buck stops with you • On call everyday (unless large cruise) so minimal alcohol intake allowed • Guests pay for medical services so often demand treatment • May be difficult to slot back into the system once return to UK • Short term contracts may only pay token amounts.

  8. HOW? • Job adverts in BMJ careers • Approach companies • Seminars available for introduction, CV review, advice and contact with recruitment officers.
