Chapter 4, Section 2: Inheritance and Descent • Some societies matrilineal: believing that all of a child’s blood was inherited from the mother. • Mother’s brother (child’s uncle) had closer relationship with child than child’s father. • Boys would inherit property from Uncle, and would also live with him and take his name.

  14. Age Grade System • Comprised of all the children born in the same year • Move through stages of life together • Helps children learn social values such as cooperation • Sound Familiar?

  15. African Religions • Most were Monotheistic • Traditional Religions usually had 1 supreme being, but lesser gods and spirits • Judaism has been present for thousands of years • Christianity for more than 1500 years • Islam for about 800 years, brought by traders
