  3. Row 1, Col 1 What is the base of the energy pyramid? There is more energy available for consumption at the base of the energy pyramid or at the top?

  4. 1,2 What is electromagnetic waves? This is energy that travels in waves.

  5. 1,3 What are primary air pollutants? Type of air pollutants where substances are emitted directly into the air from a point source.

  6. 1,4 What is the stratosphere? This is the layer of the atmosphere which contains 97% of all ozone which protects us from U.V. rad.

  7. 2,1 What is alley cropping? Strategy used by farmers to combat soil erosion. In this method, several crops are planted together in strips between trees & shrubs.

  8. 2,2 What is the first Law of Thermodynamics? This law says energy cannot be created or destroyed.

  9. 2,3 What is ground level ozone? This important secondary pollutant is a main ingredient of photochemical smog, is formed by reacting NOx and VOCs, & causes respiratory & plant damage.

  10. 2,4 What are CFCs? Ozone depletion is caused mainly by these compounds which are used as refrigerants. It takes 8 yrs. for these molecules to reach the stratosphere. One of these molecules can destroy 100,000 ozone molecules.

  11. 3,1 What is Low-Till Farming? This type of planting practice generally uses a planter/seed drill, in which disturbance of the soil is kept to a min.

  12. 3,2 What is oil shale? When this substance is heated kerogen is converted to oil. Extraction of this substance involves significant environmental damage. Largest known reserves are in Canada.

  13. 3,3 What is nitrogen dioxide? This pollutant is: formed at high temps, forms nitric acid, is evident as a brown haze, causes lung damage & suppresses plant growth.

  14. 3,4 What is the Greenhouse Effect? This process involves trapping solar radiation, caused by the presence in the ATM of certain gases that allow incoming sunlight to pass through but absorb heat radiated back from the Earth’s surface.

  15. 4,1 What are genetically modified crops? These are crops that are chgd. to increase desired characteristics & remove undesirable traits. The process involves changing the DNA molecule.

  16. 4,2 What is OPEC? Members of this group include major oil exporting countries such as: Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Venezuela & others.

  17. 4,3 What is sulfur dioxide? This pollutant is formed by burning fossil fuels, combines with water vapor in the air to produce acid rain & can cause respiratory damage.

  18. 4,4 What is Global Warming? This phenomena is believed to be due to human produced increased concentrations of greenhouse gases in the ATM, resulting in the raising of average global temps.

  19. 5,1 What is old growth forests? These types of forests are characterized by: high biodiversity, older & mixed trees, healthy soil profile, indicator species & minimal amt. of human activity.

  20. 5,2 What are the U.S., Russia & China? These are the top 3 countries with proven recoverable coal reserves.

  21. 5,3 What are VOCs? These are compounds that result from solvent vapors & can result in respiratory damage & cancer. Some examples are: gasoline, formaldehyde, acetone & benzene.

  22. 5,4 What is carbon dioxide? This greenhouse gas has an average time of 100 yrs. in the Troposphere, has a relative warming potential of 1 and results from burning oil, coal, plants, deforestation and cellular respiration.
