Problem Solving and Scientific Notation Monday, February 24th
Problem Solving Sometimes we’re faced with questions that take more than just steps to figure out. Example: A cat, dog, monkey, and elephant happen to be named Trixie, Walter, Snow, and Bob. Use the clues to figure out who is named what. • Trixie is a friend of the cat and the elephant • The dog and Bob enjoy stealing popcorn • Snow and Bob have joined the monkey in hatching a secret plant to join our math class • The elephant prefers art over math class.

Scientific Notation The sun is 149 600 000 km away from earth. But that’s a ridiculously long number to try to spell out to a friend. How can we write this number more efficiently?
Scientific Notation The sun is 149 600 000 km away from earth. But that’s a ridiculously long number to try to spell out to a friend. How can we write this number more efficiently? 149 600 000 km = 1.5 x 108 km
Scientific Notation To put a large number into scientific notation: • Move the decimal to the left until you have a coefficient between 1 and 9 • Count how many places you moved the decimal to the left. Multiply your coefficient by 10number of places
Why does scientific notation work for large numbers? 34 000 3.4 x 104. Why? 34 000 = 3.4 x 10000 = 3.4 x 104
Example: Scientific Notation The distance between the earth and the moon is 384 400 km. How far is it to the moon in scientific notation?
Practice: Scientific Notation Put 45 000 in scientific notation. • 45 x 103 • 4.5 x 103 • 4.5 x 104 • 4.5 x 10–4
Practice: Scientific Notation Put 45 000 in scientific notation. • 45 x 103 • 4.5 x 103 • 4.5 x 104 • 4.5 x 10–4
Practice: Scientific Notation Put 45 in scientific notation. • 4.5 x 102 • 4.5 x 10–2 • 4.5 x 101 • 4.5 x 10–1

Scientific Notation To put a small number into scientific notation: • Move the decimal to the right until you have a coefficient between 1 and 9 • Count how many places you moved the decimal to the right. Multiply your coefficient by 10–number of places
Why does scientific notation work for small numbers? 0.00034 3.4 x 10–4. Why? 34 000 = 3.4 x 0.0001 1 104 0.0001 = = 10–4 34 000 = 3.4 x 10-4
Example: Scientific Notation The diameter of a carbon atom is 0.0000000221cm. How big is a carbon atom in scientific notation?
Practice: Scientific Notation Put 0.0045 in scientific notation. • 4.5 x 103 • 4.5 x 10–3 • 4.5 x 104 • 4.5 x 10–4
Practice: Scientific Notation Put 0.0045 in scientific notation. • 4.5 x 103 • 4.5 x 10–3 • 4.5 x 104 • 4.5 x 10–4
