  1. Color Schemes Art Foundations

  2. What? • Color Schemes are pairs, or sets, or color used to create a piece of art. Schemes are made by using certain colors in relation to each other on the color wheel.

  3. Why? • Color Schemes help to create unity and cohesiveness in a piece of art. They make the artwork please to the eye, and can often evoke a sense of emotion.

  4. Color schemes • Monochromatic • Analogous • Color Triad • Complimentary • Warm • Cool

  5. Monochromatic Definition Example • All the colors (tints & shades) of a single hue. • Tints: Adding white. • Shades: Adding black.

  6. Analogous Definition example • Any three colors that are side by side on the color wheel.

  7. Complementary Definition Example • Colors opposite each other on the color wheel.

  8. Color Triad Definition Example • Triad color schemes are formed by three equally spaced colors on the wheel.

  9. Warm colors Definition Example • Colors that give a warm feeling.

  10. Cool colors Definition example • Colors that evoke a feeling of cool.

  11. Assignment: Color Scheme watercolor painting • Theme: Nature – Earth or Animal

  12. Step 1 • Look through books, online images, and other resources for inspiration. • Choose something natural to depict.

  13. Step 2 • Decide on a Color Scheme. • True to Nature? • Unnatural? • Monochromatic • Analogous • Triad • Complementary • Cool • Warm

  14. Step 3 • Sketch out painting on page in your sketch book. • Make notes of what colors go where, or use color pencil quickly.

  15. Step 4 • 1. Get Sketch OK’d by Mrs. Aiosa. • 2. Sketch image lightly onto Watercolor paper. • 3. Mrs. Aiosa will demo watercolor techniques.

  16. Step 5 • Paint using Watercolors. • If doing two colors next to each other: wait until first color is dry.
