I-94 Modernization Study • Began in December 2000 • Draft and Final Environmental Impact Statements (EIS) • 9-mile corridor from M-60 to Sargent Road • 8 Interchanges • 18 Bridges • EIS Purpose • Improve road and bridge condition • Improve travel efficiency • Improve safety • Two committees were established • Project Steering Committee • Technical Advisory Committee • Interchange and mainline alternatives were evaluated • 4 Public Information Meetings held at Baker College • Practical Alternatives presented at Public Hearing on April 17, 2002 • I-94 at the US-127 (West Avenue) interchange consensus building process • Record of Decision received from the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) in 2007
I-94 Recommended Alternative • 9-miles of mainline will be reconstructed • A third through lane will be constructed in each direction • A fourth merge-weave lane will be constructed in each direction between the US-127 west interchange and the US-127 east interchange • Shoulders and median will be brought up to current design standards • 7 interchanges will be reconstructed • Total estimated cost $409 million (in 2005 dollars)

What has been done… • Hawkins Road (2009 - $4.4 million) and Dettman Road (2010 - $4.3 million) bridge reconstructions • Lengthened and raised to accommodate future widening of I-94 • I-94 at Sargent Road interchange reconstruction (2011-2012 - $19.6 million) and closure of the I-94BL interchange • Proximity of the interchanges • Condition level of I-94 BL bridge • $14.4 million in HPP funding secured by Congress from SafeTEA-LU plus $1 million from TEA-21 • Includes new carpool parking lot and new non-motorized path (in cooperation with Leoni Township)
What’s next…? • I-94 at Cooper Street interchange reconstruction (2016 - $18 million) • I-94 over the Grand River and railroad (2017 - $22 million) • Road realignment project will address the approaches to the new bridge and the new interchange ($43 million)
