Clauses • A clause contains a subject and a predicate. • There are many types of clauses: • Independent • Dependent • Relative • Adjective • Noun
Compound Sentence Review • A compound sentence is two independent clauses joined with a comma and a coordinating conjunction or a semi-colon. • John fell from the trampoline, and Thanh called his mother for help.
Complex • A complex sentence contains one independent clause and one or more dependent clauses. • The main idea of the sentence is the independent clause, the clause that can stand alone. • The second idea, which is related to the main idea, is called a dependent clause. It depends on the main clause to make sense.
Complex cont. • For example: • Even though Thanh’s mother cautioned them to be careful on the trampoline, John and Thanh took some unnecessary risks while jumping. • John and Thanh took some unnecessary risks while jumping even though Thanh’s mother cautioned them to be careful on the trampoline.
Complex cont. • Notice the punctuation of the sentence. When the dependent clause comes before the independent clause, the two clauses are separated by a comma. • When the dependent clause comes after the independent clause, no comma is necessary. • Even though Thanh’s mother cautioned them to be careful on the trampoline, John and Thanh took some unnecessary risks while jumping. • John and Thanh took some unnecessary risks while jumping even though Thanh’s mother cautioned them to be careful on the trampoline.
Compound-complex • A compound-complex sentence is one where the writer joins together the two sentence types. This sentence allows the writer to provide ample information in a clear structure. It allows the writer to present information in a way that creates emphasis of a certain idea. Check it out.
Compound-complex • Has two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. • Can be ordered in a variety of ways. • After John and Thanh returned from the hospital, Thanh signed John’s cast, and John’s mother came to pick him up. • Thanh signed John’s cast afterthe two boys returned from the hospital, and then John’s mother picked him up.
