Autonomic vs. Somatic • AutonomicNervous System (ANS): part of the PNS that controls involuntaryfunctions i.e. you can’t control it • ex. heart rate, digestion, breathing, salivation • Sounds like automatic • Also calledvisceral nervous system • Uses smooth and cardiac muscle • Somatic Nervous System (SoNS): part of PNS that controls voluntary functions i.e. you can control • Ex. Raise your hand • Uses skeletal muscles
