  2. Born in 356BC Alexander the Great is known as one of the greatest and most successful commanders through all history. But was he born to greatness? Or was this powerful leader created by his upbringing?

  3. His father was Phillip II king of Macedon, his mother was Phillip’s fourth wife Olympia of Empirus. Though Philip had between 7 and 8 wives, Olympia was his principal wife, having given birth to his first son, Alexander.

  4. From a young age, Alexander was groomed to become a ruler. And at the young age of 16 he had already successfully led troops into battle for Macedon.

  5. His mother also had a major impact on Alexanders upbringing. Olympia claimed that on the night Alexander was conceived she had a dream of her womb being shot with a bolt of lightning; leading her to believe that Alexander was actually the son of the God Zeus.

  6. At the young age of 13, Phillip employed Aristotle to become Alexander’s tutor. He and his classmates who were also of noble birth learnt about medicine, morals, philosophy, religion, logic and art. Alexander also developed a deeper interest in the works of Homer (in particular the Iliad).

  7. Over the years of schooling the received together Alexander’s friends became his strongest confidants, and they would later became his generals and leading advisors once he ascended to the throne.

In 336BC at while attending the of Alexanders sister, King Philip was assassinated by the captain of his body guards, which instantaneously elevated Alexander to the thrown at the young age of 20. Immediately following this elevation Alexander began to eliminate those he viewed as a threat to his throne. His cousins and fellow princes were among those he had killed to protect his power.

  9. The news of King Philips assassination created great unrest in many of the surrounding states under Macedon rule. That of Thebes, Athens, Thessaly and the Thracian tribes all began to revolt; upon hearing this Alexander ignored the diplomatic advice of his advisors and instead mounted the Macedon Calvary of 3000.

  10. With the help of his trusted generals and friends Alexander conquered the rebellion and so began his 12 year long reign as the king of Macedon.

  11. From 336BC till 323BC Alexander the Great expanded the Macedonian empire from the Ionian Sea all the way to the Himalayas. Born into a life of Kings, warriors and icons Alexanders ambition and success rate him as one of he most successful commanders the Ancient world ever saw.
