  2. “Reading and comprehension are the foundations for all academic learning.”

  3. IREAD-3 PASS Did Not Pass Pass students demonstrate proficient understanding when reading and responding to grade-level literary and informational texts. Did Not Pass students demonstrate limited understanding when reading and responding to grade-level literary and informational texts.

  4. “Pass” Skills • Identify main idea and supporting details in text • Use information from the text to comprehend basic story plots • Connect prior knowledge with literal information from non-fiction • Determine what characters are like by what they say or do in the story

  5. “Pass” Skills • Determine theme or author’s message in fiction and nonfiction • Distinguish among basic text elements (e.g., problem and solution, fact and opinion, cause and effect) • Distinguish beginning, middle and ending sounds made by different letter patterns

  6. “Pass” Skills • Identify simple multiple-meaning words • Use sentence clues to find meaning of unknown words • Determine the meaning of words using knowledge of synonyms (different word with similar meanings) and antonyms (words with opposite meanings)

  7. “Pass” Skills • Recognize common genres (i.e., biography, autobiography, essay, etc.) • Read words with several syllables

  9. How do schools help students pass IREAD-3? Use proven, effective teaching strategies Require at least 90 minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction each day Provide daily targeted interventions in addition to the 90 minutes

What if my child does not pass IREAD-3? • Opportunity to Learn and Retest • Retention Exemptions • Previously retained two times • Students with disabilities who case conference committee has determined promotion is appropriate • English Language Learners with a proficiency of level 3 or less in the reading domain on the LAS Links English Proficiency Assessment
