  2. Parents of SWDs Want Their Child: • To be safe and treated respectfully • To work towards college and career readiness • To gain the same “functional skills”as peers • To have meaningful social interactions

  3. Reasons for Parent-Teacher Problems • Vulnerability and lack of empathy • Poor communication • Misaligned expectations • Lack of respect for expertise

  4. How Teachers CanAddress Vulnerability • Empathize • See the whole child—not just the disability • Use PBIS (no non-emergency restraint or seclusion) http://tash.org/advocacy-issues/restraint-and-seclusion-aprais/resources/ • Improve communication

  5. How Teachers CanImprove Communication • Agree to a communication plan • Communicate positive news, not just problems • Inform parent of patterns of behavior and incidents in a timely manner

  6. How Teachers CanAlign Expectations • Presume competence • Learn about civil rights/FAPErequirements • Understand that progress may be happening even if it is not evident yet • Use Universal Design for Learning to improve instruction for ALLstudents www.udlcenter.org

  7. How Teachers CanRespect Parents’ Expertise • Encourage parents to share information on their child’s abilities, motivators, learning styles, behavior triggers etc. • LISTEN to parents, without being dismissive or defensive. • Use this information to inform instruction.
