  5. GUIDE THE COMMUNITY • Manage the economy • Conduct foreign relations

Forms of Government • Democracy: government in which the people rule • Direct Democracy: ALL citizens have an equal voice, debate, and vote at the same place and same time. • Representative Democracy: citizens choose a smaller group to represent them, make laws, and govern on their behalf while remaining the source of the government’s authority.

  7. Forms of Democracy (p. 590) Presidential System: powers of the executive, legislative, & judicial branches are separated. • Direct election of by popular vote • President is head of government and head of state

  8. Parliamentary System:executive and legislative branches are united. • Courts act independently • Prime minister is chosen by Parliament • Prime minister is only head of government

  9. Monarchy: of the hereditary ruler (king or queen) is limited by the country’s constitution and laws

Principles of American Democracy (p. 11) • Rule of Law: everyone has to obey the law • Limited Government: government may only do what the citizens give it the power to do • Consent of the Governed: citizens are the source of all government power • Individual Rights: protected by the government • Representative Government: people elect leaders to govern for them and make laws • (Majority Rule: citizens abide by what most people want)

  11. Authoritarian Governments pp. 588-89 Authoritarian Government: power is held by an individual (dictatorship) or small group (oligarchy) not accountable to the people

  12. Absolute Monarchy: hereditary ruler (king, queen, emperor) have unlimited authority to rule as they wish • Dictatorships: ruler (dictator) has complete control gained and maintained by force.

  13. Totalitarian Government: government controls almost all aspects of life
