5. What is a wiki? • A wiki is an interactive website • That means it is a website with an edit button. • Clicking on Edit transforms the browser into an editor and you, the reader, into a co-author. http://askauntieweb.blogspot.com/2009/04/wikis.html

Why Use Wikis? • Wikis are free depending on what you want to use them for – ie there are free versions and paid versions • Wikis are very easy to create and change, you don't have to know any html. You notice a typo? Just click on Edit, correct it, and save your changes. Some information is missing? Just click on Edit and add it. (Just like editing in a Word document) • Wikis are designed to be edited by groups of people rather than just one individual. 7. Why use wikis Cont’d • Wikis are stored and edited on the Internet so you can access them from anywhere. • Oops! Make a mistake? The history of changes to a wiki is stored alongside the wiki itself, so you can easily revert to a previous version if you or anyone else deletes anything by mistake. • A discussion area is attached to every wiki page where you can ask questions and make suggestions about the topic on that page. You can also, easily opt to have only one discussion area for the whole wiki if you wish. • Wikis are good places for collecting and structuring information. Wikis in Action! “Hey, I am into my 4th week of doing placement work and I am truly enjoying the challenge... in fact it is such an eye-opener and I cannot believe the satisfaction being realised through the whole process. The opportunities to experience the learning happening both in the children and in me is taking me to new levels of enjoyment and empowerment.
