Identifying the Challenge:Global Trends • USA “most important issue facing the construction industry is the availability of qualified workforce” HMA Technology Feb 2001 • Pavement Engineering requires a higher level of technological understanding than ever before • “Universities are slow to change thus ignoring industry’s needs” HMA Technology.

  4. More Global & Local Trends • Northern Europe has a shortage of Engineers (attractive for South Africans) • Australia “exports” education, why don’t we? • School leavers with top maths skills attracted to IT, Finances, Actuary etc., no longer engineering
