Driving Forces – Filling the Gap • Sabita Chair at University of Stellenbosch was terminated in December 2000 (national focus) • Pavement Engineering not offered at Universities elsewhere in the Western Cape
Identifying the Challenge:Global Trends • USA “most important issue facing the construction industry is the availability of qualified workforce” HMA Technology Feb 2001 • Pavement Engineering requires a higher level of technological understanding than ever before • “Universities are slow to change thus ignoring industry’s needs” HMA Technology.
More Global & Local Trends • Northern Europe has a shortage of Engineers (attractive for South Africans) • Australia “exports” education, why don’t we? • School leavers with top maths skills attracted to IT, Finances, Actuary etc., no longer engineering
Facing the challenge • Creating excellence : co-operation rather than competition
(Inter) National Co-operation SANRAL Northern Region CSIR Technikons & Universities Asphalt Academy TU Delft Texas Austin Eastern Region Technikons & Universities UN ML etc S Southern Region Technikons & Universities STCOD Chair TRAC ITT
Meeting the challenge • Identifying industry’s needs and state of the educational system (through AsAc etc) • Post-graduate courses (block courses) • International co-operation • Student exchange • Visiting lecturers (PG courses)
Meeting the challenge (cont) • Capacity building at other tertiary institutions • Lecturer / Professor workshops (al la NCAT) • Assisting with curriculum & notes • External supervision/Moderation • Training courses (ATC & other materials) • Co-operating on research projects • Capacity building in schools (TRAC)
