  2. Have you ever wondered…? • What is the best preservation process for storing and keeping food fresh? • The most effective way to clean or purify water? • What popcorn brand pops the best? • Does the price of a golf ball determine its performance?

  3. Science Fair Project ! • Think about your hobbies and interests • Determine good ideas that can be tested “…a good science fair project must draw on your interests.”

  4. Absorbent Power of Paper Towels

Step 1 • Identify my purpose and identify my control, constants, and variables Control: a standard group or individual used for checking the results of an experiment Constant: a factor that never changes (size, ply, amount of water) Independent Variable: the variable that is changed in a scientific experiment (this is the thing you are changing or testing) (3 types of towels) Dependent Variable: the variable being measured in a scientific experiment (changes as a result of your experiment you are conducting) (100 mL of water)

  6. Step 2 • Research your topic • History of paper towels • What are they made out of? • What is absorption? • How does absorption take place using paper towels?

  7. Step 3 • Form a hypothesis • An educated guess/question that is testable. Does the brand of paper towel effect the absorbency of water?

  8. Step 4 • Step-by-step Procedure • Pour 100 mL of water into the pan. • Place the Bounty paper towel in the middle of the pan and gently place the paper towel on top of the water. • Time for 20 seconds while recording what is happening to the wet paper towel. • After 20 seconds has passed, pick up the paper towel by the bottom right hand corner and move over the beaker. • Use fingers to gently squeeze the water out without ripping the paper towel. • Record how much water was absorbed in the paper towel by measuring the amount in the beaker.

  9. Step 5 & 6 • Experiment • Do the testing outlined in your procedure • Draw conclusions and organize the results • Use tables, charts, graphs, logs, picture-taking, etc.

  10. Your turn! Create an easy to read table, chart, or graph using Pages on your Ipad from the data that is found
