What is Half Life? • Half Life is the time required for a quantity to be reduced to half its original starting value measured at the beginning of a time period. • Example: If the half life of a decaying material is 24 hours, then if the material was 100 mg at the beginning of the 24 hour period, after t=24 hrs, the left over material would weigh 50mg – or exactly half of its starting weight at the beginning of the time period.
Example: Radioactive Decay • A scientist wants to create a model for the decay of Polonium with a half life of 140 days. If the starting value of the Polonium is 210 mg. Write the model.
