TECHNOLOGY Mersin University ELT Deparment In English language teaching INRODUCTION Technology is easier and more comfortable way to learn and teach foreign language, especially for the ones who are teacher-to-be. Therefore; more and more schools and universities use technology in English Language Teaching. Different kinds of technology are used to support and enhance learning. Everything from video content and digital movie making to laptop computing has been used in classrooms, and new uses of technology such as podcasting and wikis are constantly emerging. Various technologies deliver different kinds of content and serve different purposes in the classroom. In our study, we will examine some samples of technologies and their usage. • Streaming Video, Podcasts & DVD Clips • Streaming media, podcasts and DVD clips are highly accessible and they offer authentic English to the students. • It is easy to find topical information that students can relate to. • They offer language teachers and students a wide range of possibilities for extra listening both inside and outside of the classroom. • 2) Web sites • Online dictionary : Students identify unknown words and choose the correct meaning for the context and it saves their time. • Online games: Students can play online games as class or in groups. • Examples : A Maze , Words in a Word and Activities for ESL/EFL Students CONCLUSION In conclusion, if teachers can apply technology to support their teaching, it will help both them and their students to be further in teaching and learning language. There are lots of ways to integrate technology in language classes. Using these technological devices and web facilitates learning. Also, the students can participate the courses actively and willingly ; therefore, they can easily learn the subjects. LITERATURE REVIEW The review of recent research on technology-supported language learning reveals a number of interesting points regarding existing research in this area. In the early 1990's, some critics were still unclear about the value of technology and the value of integrating it to the language learning. Then, the situation changed. Nowadays, the focus is centered on how to integrate it more effectively into the learning/teaching of languages. The research focus has shifted from simply describing and examining computer technology to exploring how to use it in order to enhance language learning. Educators have realized that effective use of technology can influence student learning (Min Liu, Zena Moore, Leah Graham, & Shinwoong Lee, 2002). Exposure to authentic materials in the target language is essential for successful language learning; however, for many language learners, this access in not enough. Therefore; language educators have long looked at information and communication technologies as possible solutions to this problem (Egbert, Chao, & Hanson-Smith, 1999;Salaberry, 2001). • References; • http://khoaanh.net/index.php?module=News&func=display&sid=963 • https://www.calico.org/a279Recent%20Developments%20in%20Technology%20and%20Language%20Learning%20A%20Literature%20Review%20and%20Metaanalysis.html • http://jabba.edb.utexas.edu/it/seclangtechrev.pdf • http://www.questia.com/googleScholar.qst;jsessionid=LrpB3MFpdDL5XJ3hTbJ94LqGpx7dBghcnpTXQwq5Wj3h0Ps3CCFH!-1022018449!362606845?docId=500956534 • 3) Mobile Phones & Cameras • The teacher can send pictures through Bluetooth or the students send each other pictures. • Students & teachers use their cameras to take photos of the board, posters and other classroom materials • Teacher records student presentations or other activities for later playback and reflection. • 4) Collaborative Communities: Wikis, blogs • A Class Wiki : Students collaborate to create a knowledge base, post class notes. • Qu Tech wiki, Class wiki • Student Blogs : A forum for students to express their voice to an audience other than the teacher. • QU Tech news Blog SEVİL ADATEPE & CEYDA ERÇETİN
