Roles & Responsibilities • OMAFRA • Regulatory Testing • DFO • Designated competent authority • Assess losses, costs, penalties • Ontario Dairy Council (processors) • Screen loads before unloading • All three groups involved in testing decisions
Pre-November 2011Inhibitor Testing Program • Regulatory Testing • One Bulk Tank sample / mo. • U of G. Agri-Food Lab • Load Screening • All loads tested before unloading • Rapid tests performed by processors
Producer Penalties • Regulatory Testing • Screened on modified Delvo, confirmed on: Disc Assay, HPLC Sulfamethazine, LCMS-MS • $6, $9 or $12/hl penalty, shut-off for 2nd in 12 mo. • Load Screening • Beta-lactams, Sulphas, Tetracylines • Suspect positive loads dumped • Trace back to producer samples • Penalties, load costs, if producer and load samples are positive
Upcoming Changes to Inhibitor Testing • Regulatory Testing • Shift to “surveillance” testing • Testing based on known or suspected risk • e.g. macrolides (Pursue) • Load Screening • Increased testing at plants by DFO & OMAFRA • Processor results confirmed using approved confirmatory (rapid) test • Increased chance of penalties, and even higher chance of assessement of losses and costs
Upcoming Changes to Inhibitor Testing Approved Rapid Tests for Plants / Confirmation • Charm • ROSA 3 SL3 B-Lactam • ROSA Sulpha • ROSA Tetracycline • Idexx • SNAP B-Lactam • Plants can choose from above and may also use: • Charm SL6, IDEXX Sulfa and Tetracycline • DFO pays for tests • Screening results confirmed using same test or one of approved confirmatory tests

Message to Producers – from Vets • Inhibitor testing will test for more drug families • Follow labels for withdrawal of milk and meat. • Follow prescription for withdrawal of milk and meat when using antibiotics off-label. • Have access to rapid tests for drugs used
