Definition An artistic movement, expressed in the visual and other realist arts, which depicts social and racial injustice, economic hardship, through unvarnished pictures of life's struggles; often depicting working class activities as heroic. They can see the cruise ships pass, but they never have any contact with this other world, until after they discover Esteban. Your Assignment • Look through "Handsomest Drowned Man" again. • Choose an issue in society that is being commented on in the story - remember what we talked about in class. • Create a piece of artwork that represents that issue in the story. Ideas: Drawing, painting, computer generated image/collage, cut and paste, etc. Symbolism is crucial to make this art "speak" to the viewer, as well as comment on that social issue in the story.
