Authors and Artists developed this movement in the 30s. Realistically portrayed the difficulties of the times, and helped the rest of the world "visualize" the struggles. This carried across several cultures. Ex: The Great Depression Why It Matters

Your Assignment • Look through "Handsomest Drowned Man" again. • Choose an issue in society that is being commented on in the story - remember what we talked about in class. • Create a piece of artwork that represents that issue in the story. Ideas: Drawing, painting, computer generated image/collage, cut and paste, etc. Symbolism is crucial to make this art "speak" to the viewer, as well as comment on that social issue in the story.
