Themes • Social realism is a genre that focuses mainly on topical issues alive in a modern society. • The outstanding themes are loosely based around money, drugs, political views, sex and class. • Social realism is about the daily grind. Surviving the tough circumstances with which the majority are stuck with. • Social realism gives people what is real, it strays miles from Hollywood-esque film making. • Dirty pretty things gives us an insight into the underground lives of illegal immigrants.

  3. conventions • The usual conventions of social realism films are things such as using unknown actors. • The thinking behind this is that social realism films depict real situations and by having unknown actors it allows us to believe we are watching something real rather than a Hollywood production.

  4. character • The character types in social realism films are often just ‘normal people’. • We can often relate to hem as we live in their world. (similar class or a bit lower. Either way we have first hand experience of this person type) • The hero is someone who not only survives but strives in their bad situation. Often someone who can rise up to change someone's or everyone's lives. • An example would be Billy Elliot. The kid who was brave enough to be different and dance. He gets out of his bad situation and makes a life for himself in London doing what he loves. He is seen as a hero.

  5. Setting • The clue for the setting is in the genre title ‘social realism’; this genre wants to portray a real situation. Something that is not in the slightest alien to us but very much relatable. • Examples of settings popular in social realism films are destinations such as flats, the middle class of cities, school life etc.

  6. This Is England • A popular social realism film is ‘This is England’. • The film itself is about a young boy taken in by a group of early adults living in the centre of youth culture at that time. • It shows how easy the influence is of a young boy and portrays truths that were definitely around in England in the 1960’s such as racism etc. • In this film made by Shane Meadows features unknown actors such as Thomas Turgoose which is consistent with the conventions of social realism. • Here is the trailer for the film: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H0jkv2bRFgQ

  7. Mise-En-Scene • Lighting – It is usually a quite dingy sort of light. That of grey clouds and represents the somewhat ‘dingy’ lives of the characters. • Setting- as explained in slide 5 • Costume- it tends to be the clothes of the people in the film. Whatever time it is set at they will be wearing attire to compliment that time period. So for example in this is England we have an extremely stereotypical mod/skinhead dress theme which fits accordingly with the time period. • Camera- POV is a popular shot in social realism because it adds to us getting their experience and relating even further to the characters.
