  1. Tutorial 2 Drawing Text, Adding Shapes, and Creating Symbols

  2. Objectives Draw lines, curves, ovals, and rectangles Apply stroke and fill colors Modify strokes and fills Transform graphic objects Import a bitmap graphic Change a bitmap graphic’s properties New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  3. Objectives Create text blocks Create symbols and instances of symbols Organize symbols in the Library panel Apply filters to symbol instances and text Apply and transform a gradient New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  4. Drawing Lines and Shapes • With Flash, graphics images are often created from scratch • Enclosed areas of shapes can be filled with a color • Ovals, rectangles, and polygons can include strokes, fills, or both strokes and fills • Using the Oval, Rectangle, and PolyStar Tools • Used to draw simple shapes • All tools work in the same manner New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  5. Drawing Lines and Shapes • PolyStar tool is used to draw a polygon or star • Can indicate number of sides the shape will have • Can specify the value of the star point size • The Oval tool can be used to draw a perfect circle • The Rectangle tool can draw a perfect square • Using the Pencil Tool • Used to draw free-form shapes • Can select a color, height, and style for the lines drawn • Can control the way lines appear as they are drawn by using the Pencil modifier buttons in the Tools panel New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  9. Changing Strokes and Fills • After you draw an object, you can: • Change the stroke color, height, or style • Change the fill color • Add a fill or a stroke to an object • Using the Paint Bucket Tool • Changes the color of an existing fill or adds a fill to an enclosed area that does not have a fill • Fill color selected from the Fill Color control • Gap Size modifiers • Determine how tool will paint partially enclosed areas New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  10. Changing Strokes and Fills New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  11. Changing Strokes and Fills • Using the Eyedropper Tool • Copies properties of a fill or stroke from one object and applies them to the fill or stroke of another object • Can also be used to copy properties of a text block and apply them to another text block New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  12. Changing Strokes and Fills • Using the Free Transform Tool • Can transform an entire object or a particular stroke or fill New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  15. Working with Bitmaps • A photograph is a bitmap graphic • Stored as a row-by-row list of every pixel in the graphic along with each pixel’s color • Different from vector graphics which are stored as mathematical instructions • Bitmap files sizes are larger and do not resize well • Using them in a Flash movie increases movie’s download time • Most common bitmap files for the Web are JPEG and GIF New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  16. Working with Bitmaps • Import bitmap graphics into Flash • Store them in the document’s library • Library panel lists all objects in the Library for a document • Also includes information about each item such as whether is it s shared document and how many times it is used in the document • Setting Bitmap Properties • Change its name • Update the bitmap file if modified • Change its compression settings New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  17. Working with Bitmpas • Lossy Compression • Used by JPEG formats • Format is better for photographs • Removes some of the original data in the image to reduce the file size • Lossless Compression • Used by GIF formats • Format is better for images with solid areas of color, such as logos and drawn shapes • PNG is a new alternative to GIF formats • Retains all original data • Limited to 256 colors New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  20. Adding Text • Text Layout Framework (TLF) Engine used to create text • Provides extensive formatting options • Colors • Font families • Fonts • Creates Read Only, Selectable, or Editable text blocks • Text in a Read Only text block cannot be selected or changed • Text in a Selectable text block can be selected but not changed • Text in an Editable text block can be selected and changed New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  21. Adding Text • The Classic Text Engine, which creates static, dynamic, or input text blocks, is an alternative to the TLF engine • A static text block is a text object that does not change after the document is published • A dynamic text field is a text object that can be altered after document is published • A field is a unit of data • An input text field allows the user to enter text in forms or surveys New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  22. Adding Texts • Using the Text Tool • Creates text blocks for your documents • Fixed-width text block doesn’t change as you type • Single-line text block extends as you type • Move a text block using the Selection tool • Resize, rotate, and skew the text block using the Free Transform tool • Modify the font, font size, text fill color, text styles, alignment, and other text properties in the Property inspector New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  23. Adding Text New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  24. Checking the Spelling of Text • Check Spelling command verifies spelling in each text block • Can also check spelling of text in other parts of document such as layer names and symbol names • Features of the Spelling Setup dialog box • Document options • Built-in dictionaries • Personal dictionary • Checking options New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  25. Checking the Spelling of Text New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  26. Working with Symbols • A symbol is an element that can be used multiple times in a document • Comparing Symbol Behavior Types • Movie clip • Operates independently of the movie in which it appears • Graphic symbol • Operates in sync with the Timeline of the movie in which it appears • Button symbol • Has its own four-frame Timeline so interactive buttons can be created New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  27. Working with Symbols • Creating Symbols • Convert an existing graphic • Specify its registration point, which can be used to control the symbol’s animation • Create a new symbol • Specify name and type with each symbol created New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  28. Working with Symbols • Exploring Symbols in the Library • Use Library panel to view, organize, and edit symbols stored in the Library • Assign name • Set/modify properties • Properties stored with the symbol in the Library • Symbols created within a document are saved with that document • Symbols can be shared by making them part of a shared library New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  29. Working with Symbols New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  30. Working with Symbols • Editing a Symbol • Use symbol-editing mode to modify a symbol • Can be edited by itself or in place with other graphic on the Stage dimmed • Flash documents can be divided into multiple scenes • Every document as at least one scene New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  31. Working with Symbols New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  32. Working with Symbols • Creating and Editing Instances of Symbols • New symbols are automatically stored in the library • Use symbols in your document by creating instances • Create an instance by dragging a symbol onto Stage from the Library panel • Instances may be modified without altering the original symbol in the Library • Changes you make to one instance do not affect the other instances • Changes to the symbol change all instances of that symbol New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  33. Working with Symbols New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  34. Applying Filters • A filter is a special graphic effect that can be applied to movie clips, buttons, and text • Applied using the Filters section of the Property inspector • Preset filters include: • Drop shadow • Blur • Glow • Bevel • Multiple filters can be applied to one object • Filters have properties you can set to adjust the filter’s effect on the object New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  35. Applying Filters New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  36. Using Gradients • A Gradient is a gradual blend or transition from one color to another • Used to create special effects • Adds a professional touch to documents • Linear gradient • Blends colors from one point to another in a straight line • Radial gradient • Blends colors from one point outward in a circular pattern New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  37. Using Gradients • Applying a Gradient Fill • Can be applied to shapes as well as text • Select desired gradient fill color before drawing the shape • Use Paint Bucket tool to apply gradient to an existing shape New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  38. Using Gradients • Lock Fill Modifier • Paints one gradient across several objects on the stage rather than one gradient for each object New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  39. Using Gradients New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6

  40. Using Gradients • Transforming Gradient Fills • Gradient Transform tool • Modifies gradient fill in an object • Move a gradient’s center • Change its size/direction New Perspectives on Adobe Flash Professional CS6
