What is it? • At Edison, the four ASB officers occupy three elected positions • Co- President, Treasurer and Secretary • A Leadership Committee was established during the 2008/09 school year • Allows us to provide much more in the way of activities and events for the students of Edison while spreading out the responsibility • Students in 7/8th grades may apply for membership • Factors considered include GPA, Teacher recommendation, and the quality of the application itself • There are currently 19 members of the Leadership Committee in addition to the four officers
Funds • The “Golden Rule” for ASB’s in Washington: “Public money, generated by the students or in the name of the students may be used only for Cultural, Athletic, Recreational, or Social Purposes” (C.A.R.S.) • This means that ASB funds may be used for assemblies, field trips, recess and sports team equipment etc. • We may not purchase items to be used mainly for curricular purposes
Fund Raising • The leadership committee has allowed us the opportunity to add other fund raisers that the students love • Candy Grams for Valentines Day • Expanded school store hours • Approximately 60% of the total funds are earmarked for field trips • Teachers and coaches also request funds for equipment • Other activities sponsored by the ASB/ Leadership Committee include…
Holiday Food Drive • The 2009 Food Drive raised 8,039 non- perishable food items for our adopted families • Extra items were donated to the Clear Lake and Alger food banks as well as two schools in the Burlington- Edison School District • ASB/ Leadership committee members were responsible for creating the goal charts, advertising the food drive, counting and sorting as well as helping to package the food for the families • Team members, along with some 6th, 7th and 8th grade students donated time at Haggen on Saturday, December 11th to garner further donations
Penny Drive • ASB/ Leadership students coordinate the two year old annual penny drive for a selected charity • Members are responsible for coordinating, collecting pennies, accounting, and charting the competition • We also plan and run the 45 minute long kickoff assembly • Last year, over $1,200 was raised for “Pennies for Peace”
Blue and Gold/ Spirit Weeks • Students plan, advertise and judge weekly Blue and Gold Fridays and Spirit Weeks • Spirit weeks include homecoming week • Super Hero Day, Favorite Color Day etc. • We will have a spirit week for carnival this year with Olympic themed days
Ohana Week and School BBQ • Ohana week is a new tradition at Edison that is planned and implemented by the ASB/ Leadership Committee • Ohana means family • This is a great way to remind and encourage students to treat everyone at Edison with kindness and respect as we are one big family • Theme days such as “High Five Day” “Random Acts of Kindness Day” and “Sit With Someone New Day” emphasize this theme • Ohana week culminates with the All School BBQ on Friday • We had 80% hot lunch participation for year one • The All School “Edison” picture is in the main hallway • We received a huge amount of positive feedback and plan to make this an annual event!
