How Green Is BP? • In 1998 CEO publicly committed Co to cutting carbon-dioxide emissions by 10% below 1990 levels by 2010 • 40% cut from business as usual • More ambitious target than Kyoto Protocol itself • Business units that reduced emissions or cut fuel consumption would have those savings count toward bottom line, would be reflected in pay scales and bonuses • Co not only met target, it exceeded it, eight years ahead of schedule and w/ no net economic cost
How Green Is BP? • So why does BP still have critics? • Co interested in Artic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) • Co, by virtue of its slogans and actions, tried to seize moral high ground and so is judged by different standard • Next set of goals: • Reduce global-warming gases from BP’s own operations as well as from products it makes • Maintain CO2 emissions at current levels even as Co doubles production of oil and gas • Make 50% of Co’s pump sales worldwide come from clean fuels • Source: New York Times Magazine, 12/8/02
