What is Healthwatch? • Greater Manchester’s Local Healthwatch Network • Working with BME Communities
People’s experiences are mixed 7 out of 10 of us believe we get a good quality service from the NHS and social care services But digging deeper with the public… • 1 in 3 of us have experienced, or know someone who has experienced, a serious mistake or abuse, leaving many of us with a deep concern over basic safety standards. • More than half of us who have experienced a problem with health or social care in the last three years did nothing to report it. • Almost one in four people say that professionals aren’t really interested in what they have to say or do not actively listen.
People know change is needed 94% think NHS and Social Care services could be improved Almost 9 in 10 think the healthcare system needs to change

BME Health Inequalities • BME communities generally have worse health than the overall population, although the patterns of ethnic health inequalities • are very diverse. • Ethnic health inequalities result from many interlinking factors, of which the relative poverty of BME groups is probably the most important.
Use of health services by BME groups • Most BME groups access primary care at rates as high as the general population (in relation to need). • Some evidence of lower access to hospital care among BME groups • Eg South Asians have been found to have lower access to care for coronary heart disease • Rates of dissatisfaction with NHS services are higher among some BME groups than their White British counterparts. • Eg South Asians report poorer experiences as hospital inpatients,
Working with BME Communities • HW Bolton • Asian Elders - short film about coping with dementia • Hindu Forum - play about coping with mental health in the Hindu community • HW Bury will be focussing on faith based communities and children as two of its core agendas • HW Rochdale 4 month awareness raising campaign with BME communities • HW Stockport • Stockport and District Mind local BME women and mental health awareness sessions, social mornings and Eid event. • BME members in reading group, highlighting issues of language and communication in publicity materials • core group member contributed to the new book 'Nurturing the Nation: The Asian contribution to the NHS since 1948'
