  2. The United States: Ideals • The United States is a nation founded upon the ideals of: • Protected rights • Equality • Liberty and freedom • Every citizen of the U.S. should participate in supporting these ideals!

  3. What is justice? • How can you do that? • One of the ways that Americans can help make our country better is to educate themselves and think about important questions, both throughout history and today. • Our big question for this course is, “What does justice consist of?”

  4. Four Areas • We will look at justice throughout American history, in four areas: • Economic justice – All Americans have access to the materials and services they need to live good lives. • Gender justice – Both men and women are able to pursue their needs and desires equally. • Social justice – All Americans have equal access to the rights and privileges in our society, regardless of race, color, creed, etc. • Political justice – The government is protecting the rights of the people equally. • Throughout the course, we will frequently check in on each of these four areas, and the four statements with them.

Justice • There are five levels of justice that we will use to explain how things are in the time period we will talk about: • Complete justice – Justice in this area and time are as perfect as could possibly be. • Justice – Justice in this area is good for most people, but is not perfect. • Partial justice – Justice in this area is incomplete, and there are obvious reasons why. • Little justice – There is very little justice. • Injustice – There is no justice at all. • As the course goes on, we will plot these on a graph and take a look at the growth or shrinking of justice in America.

  6. Your Assignment • Today, your assignment is to: • Go on to the Internet and search for an issue related to justice in American society. • It can be from the present day, or it could be from the past. • Copy and paste the link of the issue to Mr. White’s blog. • On a sheet of paper, write a 1-paragraph summary of this issue of justice. Explain the issue so that anyone could understand what is happening
