  1. LumiCal mechanical & sensors design Wojciech Wierba J.Błocki, E.Kielar, J.Kotuła, K.Oliwa, L.Zawiejski FCAL Workshop, IFJ PAN Cracow, 06-07.05.2008

  2. LumiCal inside ILD • LumiCal can be mounted to special support fixed to the ‘construction’ pipe. • Cables and cooling water pipes can be feed out in the gap between TPC and ECal endcap. • Space for connectors • Access to connectors • LumiCal has to be centered on the outgoing beam.

  3. Gravity! VXD ? LumiCal ~250 kg LumiCal ~250 kg BeamCal ~200 kg BeamCal ~200 kg LHCal ~1000 kg ? LHCal ~1000 kg ?

  4. How to fix the LumiCal? • x & y initial positioning better than 0.5 mm • z initial positioning better than 0.1 mm • Temporary support for detector assembly on the beam pipe • Fine x, y, z position adjustment

  5. Mechanical design • Two options • Silicon sensors glued on both sides of every second tungsten plate • Silicon sensors glued on one side of each tungsten plate • Cooling system • Water pipes going around half plate. Estimated water flow – a few liters per minute (P mean = 20 W, Δt = 0.1 ºC)

  6. Space for sensors & electronics

  7. Sensor prototype • Masks for prototypes have been ordered from Hamamatsu (~2 months, ~20 k€) • Sensors order depends on money (price from ~900 €/40 pcs. order to ~1400 €/10 pcs. order per one tile) • „Dummy” sensor ready

  8. Fan out • Traces on Kapton foil (50 µm) • Double sided • Trace 150 µm, space between 150 µm (can be smaller) • Sensor pads will be glued with conductive glue to fan out traces

  9. Summary – Mechanical design • Very challenging project for mechanical design. • We have to choose between single sided and double sided version. • Opening and closing the half barrels with accuracy better than ~5 µm. • Work in progress on precise adjustment of x, y, z and tilt position of LumiCal. • Need detailed study on cooling. • More information about ‘construction’ tube.

  10. Summary – Sensor design • Sensor prototypes will be ready by the end of this year. • Fan out have to be tested (crosstalk, stray capacitance, conductive gluing, bonding on Kapton foil). • „Dummy” sensor have to be equipped with capacitors and tested with fan out – can be used for FE electronic tests. • Test beam prototype - the design should start soon
