Okinawa- island 350 miles from Japan was invaded U.S. lost 12,000 men. Island would serve as a staging area for the invasion of Japan. Japanese would not surrender had to kill them all. Invasion of main land would cost millions of lives on both sides.
Manhattan Project- code name for the program that built the atomic bomb. Program was led by Gen. Leslie Groves and physicist Robert Oppenheimer. • Truman felt it was his duty to use every weapon available to save American lives • Allies threatened Japan with “utter destruction” wanted them to surrender
August 6, 1945 used A-bomb on Hiroshima killed thousands instantly many thousands more died later from radiation sickness. August 9, 1945 bombed Nagasaki killed 75,000 August 15, 1945 Japan surrendered
