  1. NATIVE AMERICANS: Families-where they live and language. Families broken down further Into tribes. Family-Iroquoian Tribe-Cherokee Family-Muskogean Tribe-Alabama, Apalachee,Choctaw, Chickasaw,Creek,Seminole Yamasee Creek-people with different language. 1826 Congress ordered west. 14 tribes. Upper and Lower Creek. Cherokee-real people. 1838 Congress ordered west to tracts of unsed land called reservations. Trail of Tears: Cherokee walked through TN,KY,IL,MI,AR, and OK. 17,000 began about 4,000 died.

  2. LIFE IN THE SOUTHEAST: GOVERNMENT: Chiefs-leaders of tribe. Council-elders of the tribe. Discuss village life. Women could be on council and often cast deciding vote. Two groups civil and war. Different clans. Powwows-festival for trading,socializing, and dancing. Shaman-kept tribal legends and rituals alive and passed down. Medicine Man-special powers to heal the sick and see the future. VILLAGE: Earthlodge-log,mud, and grass homes. Small one for the winter. One for the summer. Pit house-in the middle pit with rocks to make steam for cooking and warmth. Summer house open and cool. NO TEEPEES Along streams. Village surrounded by walls for protection. Beds were animal skin. Girls-deer for grace and beauty. Boys panther for strength.

  3. FAMILY: Simple marriage ceremonies. Could divorce. Children belong to the mothers tribe. Children worked. Boys: Girls: -Hunting,- farming -weave baskets -Traders,- make tools & weapons -grind corn,- cook,- spun cloth -Plant,- chop trees,- carpenters -gather nuts & berries -gather firewood & water Green Corn Ceremony. TRANSPORTATION: Horse Canoe Walking WEAPONS: bow and arrows, spears, axes, war clubs, blowguns and darts.

CLOTHING: Males: buckskin breechcloths, buckskin pants,leggings, moccasins Female: buckskin shirts and capes, moccasins, beaded jewelry Woven cloth, feathers, both long hair used combs made of bone antlers. Men shaved heads. Shells were tweezers and razors. Red feathers warrior. FOOD: Deer, squirrel,raccoons,fish,rabbit,quail,turkey, 3 different types of corn (maize) prepared 42 different ways. Squash,beans,vegetables, berries,nuts,fruits. Never ate raw meat it was stewed,bbq, dried,or smoked. 60% diet was plants. RELIGION: All nature had spirits. Many different gods. Different animals were sacred (wolf/rattlesnake, albino) Reincarnation, burial mounds, Legends and myths.

CHILDHOOD: -First four days if not healthy mom would kill baby. -Nursed until 6 years old. -Boys taught by oldest uncle on mother’s side. -Girls taught by the oldest aunt on mother’s side. -Family valued. Elders were respected for wisdom. -Twins were special.
