  2. Solid Waste Reduction and Recycling Education of Staff and Visitors Partnerships with Concessionaire Educated Purchasing

  3. NPS collects approximately 3,000 tons of solid waste from the North and South Rim facilities per year – Both NPS and Concessionaire • Divert approximately 1,007 tons of non-segregated material to recycle facilities – 35% diversion rate • NPS Goal for next year is 50%

  4. Cost of the entire solid waste program for the park is approximately $1.8 million per year • Norton Environmental Services removes collected recyclable materials from Park at a cost of $284,000.00 per year • Costs are shared expenses by NPS, Concessionaires and residents

  5. Education: • Interpretive programs for visitors and school groups • School Scholarship sponsored by Delaware North for Grand Canyon School essay contest on Environmental Stewardship • Xanterra’s ‘Pinyon Press’ publication with section to staff called “Alphabet of Recycling”

  6. Education: – cont’d • Earth Day Participation • T-shirt design contests for students • Paper bag design contests for students • Conservation education for employees

  7. Partnerships: • Installation of recycle containers in housing areas – NPS and Concessionaire • Eliminate plastic bags in shops and grocery facilities • Reduce/eliminate of Styrofoam products • Battery recycling • Florescent bulb recycling/green bulb purchasing

  8. Partnerships: – cont’d • Composting programs by Forever Resorts at the North Rim and Xanterra at Phantom Ranch facilities • Use of reusable products in concession facilities to eliminate waste - cloth napkins and rags rather than paper products • Cardboard recycling

  9. Educated Purchasing: • Recycled content products • “Greener” cleaning products • Bulk purchasing
