  1. BiomassTradeCentre II Development of biomass trade and logistics centres for sustainable mobilisation of local wood biomass resources WP5: Promotion of Quality standards and sustainability criteria

  2. Work Package 5Promotion of Quality standards and sustainability criteria -SFI • The aim of this WP is to increase consumers’ confidence in biomass quality and its sustainable production.

  3. 5.1 Preparation of a report on the state-of-the-art • 5.2 Collection of good practice examples of QA/QC • 5.3 Building a quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) system for small biomass producers and suppliers • 5.4 Creationof practical guideline for quality certification schemes and labelling systems • 5.5 Implementation of QA/QC system created in task 5.3 for biomass producers and suppliers • 5.6 Preparation of materials for workshops and training sessions • 5.7 Preparation of Booklet on general information about EU CEN standards • 5.8 A voluntary network of wood biomass laboratories

  4. Description of the tasks: T 5.1 • Preparation of State-of-the-art Certification schemes and labelling in participating countries • TEMPLATE : State-of-the-art_Partner_D 5_1 • Deliverable: 5.1 • All reports are published on web page

  5. T 5.2 • Collection of good practice examples of QA/QC implementation or labelling of wood fuels in participating • Deliverable: D 5.2 • At leasttwocases for each country or region are presented

  6. T 5.3 • Building a quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) system for small biomass producers and suppliers based on EU CEN standards. • All partners translated this document to national language • Deliverable: D 5.3 • We urgent need also versions from: • Ireland • FinalversionfromAustria

  7. T5.4 Creation of practical guideline for quality certification schemes and labeling systems to comply within sustainability criteria and CEN technical specifications • Deadline: 31. 07. 2013 (27M). This task will be elaborated in next project period according to results from previous tasks. • Deliverable: 5.4

  8. From the quality certification schemes and labelling systems in participating countries identified in task 5.1., an analysis will be done whether these existing schemes and systems already comply with sustainability criteria identified in task 2.4 and with the environmental labels covered by ISO categories I, II and III, the FSC and PEFC labels, and the ecolabel criteria. The possibility to include carbon foot printing to such schemes/systems will be also analysed. T5.4 • PeletGold - AIEL • En Plus - AVEBIOM • Wood Fuel Quality Assurance (WFQA) scheme for Ireland - IrBea • CTFC??? • ……

  9. Then a practical guideline will be created with the aim at explaining how to implement these relevant schemes and systems identified in task 5.1, and at pointing out their relevance for complying with sustainability criteria and biomass quality requirements set in CEN technical specifications. Recommendations to comply with this sustainability criteria and CEN technical specifications will be incorporated. Regarding the analysis on carbon foot prints, the calculations of CO2 storage in wood fuels and estimation of emissions will be based on internationally agreed methodologies (e.g. PAS 2050, IPCC Good practice guidelines), and knowledge from the national project “The importance of forest based production chain for mitigation and adaptation to climate change” will be used.

  10. D5.4 Practical guidelines for quality certification schemes and labelling systems to comply with sustainability criteria and CEN technical specifications • What will be our product? • We have to use data from 5.1 • Data from 2.4 (Sustainable criteria) – not available • All about implementation of CEN standards is in QA/QC system (T5.3) • Our project officer is willing to accept a solution proposed by consortium – we can combine tasks or deliverables • Our suggestion is: • To build on our QA/QC system – to add some chapters on CEN standards implementation and to name the document: • „Practical guidelines for implementation of quality control and quality assurance for small wood biomass business“

  11. T5.5 • Implementation of QA/QC system created in task 5.3 for biomass producers and suppliers in 24 selected companies/producers in participating countries • Deadline: 31. 03. 2014 (35) • Deliverable: 5.6

  12. List of companies in which QA/QC system will be tested

  13. Template for the report about implementation of QA/QC systems

  14. T5.6 • Preparation of materials for workshops and training sessions in WP 2, 3 and 4 on EU CEN standards, QA/QC system, product labelling and carbon foot printing for wood fuels • Deliverable:5.5 • We have to show what we have to trainings – ppt presentations

  15. T5.7 • Preparation of Booklet on general information about EU CEN standards, their implementation, and basic information on QA/QC implementation. • Deliverable: D 5.7 • We need to agree about: • Table of content • Authors

  16. T 5.8 • A voluntary network of wood biomass laboratories from all participating countries and regions will be established. • Deadline: 30. 04. 2014 (36 M) • Deliverable: D 5.8

  17. Till 30.4.2014 • Building a quality control and quality assurance (QA/QC) system for small biomass producers and suppliers based on EU CEN standards. – IrBEA and LkStmk • Prepare the national version of Guidelines • Implementation of QA/QC system in the selected companies – prepare the report (template!) • Prepare, translate and print a booklet • Add some laboratories to voluntary network of wood biomass laboratories
