Kallum Garbett How Direct Payments have helped me…
About me… • My name is Kallum Garbett • I am 18 years old and I live at home with my Mom and Dad • I have a learning disability and Autism • I go to the Glasshouse College • I have learned how to make and decorate glass • I am very interested in local history • I need support with lots of things...
How I got a Direct Payment • My Social Worker, Daniel did an assessment, finding out what I need support with • We agreed what Mom and Dad could help with • He worked out how much money I could have to meet the rest of my needs • We agreed a plan – who would help with what • Dad and I opened a Building Society account and the money gets paid in • We employed Abi, my Personal Assistant (she is now self employed) • Mom and Dad show the council how we spend the money • Daniel visits to see if we are getting on OK and how the Direct Payment has benefited me
My Personal Assistant, Abi • I see Abi on Monday evenings and in the college holidays • We go to museums, go for walks, go swimming, do cooking and visit friends • Abi supports me with: budgeting and using money, getting around on the bus, keeping safe, doing my laundry and reassures me if I get anxious or worried • Abi is supporting me to go on holiday in the summer • Abi has helped me overcome my fear of dogs
How I have benefited… • Having a Direct Payment has helped me to: • Choose the person who supports me • Get the support when I need it • Keep occupied and do the activities that I enjoy • Learn new skills and keep safe • The Direct Payment pays for some of my support but my family, friends and tutors at college are also an important part of my circle of support • Thank you
