  1. Biodiversity Warm Up Question: Answer in your notebook  What is your favorite animal? Why?

  2. Biodiversity: • short for biological diversity – usually this term is used to refers to the variety of different species in a given area • Biosphere: • all the places on the planet where living things exist

  3. What kinds of biodiversity are out there?

  4. Insects…

  5. Fungi…

  6. Arachnids…

  7. Nematodes…

  8. Bacteria…

  9. Plants…

  10. Mollusks…

  11. Algae….

  12. Others…

  13. Protozoans…

  14. Crustaceans…

  15. Vertebrates…

  16. How do we measure biodiversity?

  17. Levels of Biodiversity Species- variety of different organisms Ecosystem- variety of habitats and organisms Genetic- variability within a species (DNA)

  18. Species Diversity

  19. Genetic Diversity

  20. Ecosystem Diversity

  21. Why do we need to maintain our biodiversity?

  22. Agriculture….

  23. Medicine…

  24. Ethical

  25. Aesthetic

  26. EcoTourism • Where nature and $$ co-exist • Countries set aside national park land • Wealthy people from other countries pay to visit • Typically in biodiversity “hotspots” • Rainforests, exotic ecosystems • End Goals: • Host country makes $$ • Eco-tourists leave happy • Ecosystem remains (relatively) undisturbed

  27. Aesthetic

  28. Aesthetic

  29. Species Survival

  30. Stability of Ecosystems

  31. Potential???

  32. What are the key players in maintaining a healthy ecosystem?

  33. Endemic species: • a species that is native to a particular place and that is found only there.

  34. Ecologists often use the numbers of endemic species of plants as an indicator of overall biodiversity because plants form the basis of ecosystems on land. • Areas of the world with greater diversity also have large numbers of endemic species.

  35. Giraffes on the African Savannah

  36. Kangaroos and Koalas in Australia

  37. Humuhumunukunukuapuaa is Hawaii’s state fish

  38. Garibaldi to California

  39. Darwin’s finches are endemic to the Galapagos

  40. Keystone Species: • “A species that is critical to the functioning of the ecosystem in which it lives because it affects the survival and abundance of many other species in its community” • Critical member of the ecosystem • Removal of this species could bring collapse to the entire food web

  41. Sea Otters  Sea Urchins  Kelp

  42. Jaguars  Top predators

  43. Sea Stars  Sea Urchins, Clams and Snails

  44. Elephants destroy trees  clearing land for savanna habitat

  45. Beavers convert streams with dams to make marshes and swamps

  46. Grizzly Bears  Salmon  Fertilizer??

  47. Video- Why are bees disappearing? http://www.ted.com/talks/marla_spivak_why_bees_are_disappearing.html

  48. Closure Questions • What is the difference between an endemic species and an invasive species? • Name 2 benefits of biodiversity to humans • What is one reason for bee decline?
