What is the STEM FIG? • Summer 2012, 9 faculty and 1 administrator attended the National Summer Institute for Learning Communities in Olympia, Washington. • The 5-day institute provided an opportunity for the team to develop a 2-year action plan that would help initiate STEM learning communities at MSJC • The STEM FIG is an ongoing faculty inquiry group for STEM Learning Communities development and implementation.
STEM Grant Award • Mt. San Jacinto College received the 4.2 million dollar STEM grant because we are a Hispanic serving institution dedicated to increasing Hispanic student success in STEM fields • The STEM grant award continues until the end of the 2015 – 2016 academic at which time our college should have met the following objectives
STEM Grant Objectives Hispanic and Underprepared Student Population • Improvement in the development of Student Education Plansby 45% • Course retention and success rates will be significantly higher • The percentage transferring to CSU and/or UC systems will increase a minimum of 6% • The percentage attaining degrees in the fields of STEM will double STEM Instructional Departments • By June 2013 100% of will develop SLOs. By September 2016 at least 80% will have assessed their SLOs.
STEM FIG Thesis • The objectives of the STEM grant are interrelated and can be achieved through changes in three areas • Capacity: Course offerings that match student’s needs • Curriculum: Enhance course content and integration • Community: Student services intervention and engaging extracurricular opportunities

Number of STEM Majors Actionable Items • Identify students that are already planning on majoring in STEM by asking them during student orientation or by sending them letters from the STEM program if they assess into Math 105 or higher • Without knowing how many students we are serving we cannot make data driven decision about how many courses to offer
Community Questions • Are STEM students aware of the required courses for STEM majors?
STEM Major Counseling Actionable Items • Make sure that STEM majors receive appropriate counseling and educational plan development • Include additional information in the class schedule and catalog that makes it clear which science classes are for STEM majors and which ones are for general education
