  2. Introduction • Air valves are provided in the Conveying mains to expel or admit air during operation, • Air valves are housed in valve pits standardized during 1940, • The air valves are prone to tampering and leaking giving room for submergence and consequent pollution.

  3. Issues with air valve pits • Exposed to tampering by public. In many places, people disturb the ball and make the valve leaking. Valve pits with full of water is being used for bathing by the people and lorry drivers also use the pits for bathing and cleaning after defecations. Hence these valve pits give room for contamination/pollution. Outbreak of cholera in Thirukostiyur, Sivagangai district during 2000s is an example of water contamination at valve pits. • Leaks lead to un-accounted for water, • Pressure drop in the main leading insufficient head to deliver water to the delivery points, • Leaky valves by disturbance lowers the system head, • Illegal drawl of water. Knowing the function principle of ball arrangement, people insert pipe to lower the ball and draw water indiscriminately.

  9. Suggestion • In order to overcome the tampering, leaks and pollution in air valve installation, it is proposed to construct air valve towers with encasing instead of air valve pit. • Drawing and cost details are given.
