  4. Legalism • Founder: Hanfeizi • Believed people were bad • Good rulers need: • Strict laws • Harsh Punishments • Punished those who did not do their duty • What do you think of Legalism???

  6. We pick up with the Zhou dynasty… • Confucius and Laozi developed philosophies • systems of ideas concerned with social order and good government Confucius Laozi

  7. Daoism • Founder: Laozi • Goal: live in harmony with nature • Best government  no government (governed least) • What do you think of Daoism?

  9. But….is there something in the middle???? YES THERE IS…. IT IS CALLED CONFUCIANISM

  10. Ideas of Confucius • People are naturally good • Education should be the road to advancement in society  civil service exams • Individuals must accept place in society • MAITAIN SOCIAL ORDER

  11. Confucius Beliefs • Ideas collected in the Analects: collection of work and ideas • COULD ONLY BE PEACE IF GOOD GOVERNMENT • Filial piety  Respect for elders • Harmony begins when people accept place in society  stressed 5 key relationships

  12. 5 Relationships Superior Inferior Subject Wife Son Younger Brother • Ruler • Husband • Father • Elder • Brother Superiors should care for inferiors and set a good example, while inferiors owed loyalty and obedience to the superiors.
