Land of Opportunity The population of this region is ~ 6.5 million people, with ~1.8 million children <18 years of age (~25% of the children in Texas). The region includes 3 of the 10 fastest growing metropolitan areas in the US (Austin, McAllen, and Laredo are #4, #5 and #9, respectively). Texas has the second youngest population and the highest number of children per family in the US.
