Phenomenology(Schutz 1970) • language is the central medium for transmitting typifications and thereby meaning • the essential task of language is to convey information and to describe reality • viewed as a system of typifications words can be seen as the constitutive building blocks of everyday reality • social phenomenology rests on the tenet that social interaction contructs as much as conveys meaning

Symbolic interactionism(Bogdan & Taylor) • people are constantly in a process of interpretation and definition as they move from one situation to another • shared perspective refers to a definition of a situation which number of actors hold • all social organizations consist of actorswho develop definitions of situations, or perspectives, through the process of interpretation andwho then act in terms of these definitions
